Drone Insurance What’s the difference between RPAS and model aircraft?
People have been flying model aircraft for many years. How are these different from the RPAS?
Model aircraft are defined by international aviation bodies, “Any small aircraft which is being used for the sole purpose of recreational flying.”.
When you use your RPAS for recreational purposes, you must follow the same rules that are required for the operation of model aircraft .
When you use your RPAS for any other purpose, including for commercial, government or research, you must hold both an ‘aerial works permission’ and a ‘permission to operate an RPAS in Irish airspace’.
Both of these permissions must come from the IAA. In other words, IAA classifies your unmanned aircraft by what you do with it. More information cab be found on the IAA website.
